A New Kind of Jewish Center
36 Mystics is a new kind of Jewish community center, a Jewish discovery center, in downtown Birmingham.
The center features the "Jerusalem Artists Market", uniquely created Jewish gifts & artwork by Israeli artists from Coby's in the W. Bloomfield JCC; and select books on Jewish thought.
Behind the gift shop is our Contemporary Cafe, a clean well-lighted space, serving coffee, tea, and light faire.
Down the hall is our flexi-space room, where we hold special events, our Family Fun Factory and an amazing Early-Hebrew Toddler-and-Me program.
The purpose of center is to create a sense of neighborhood community for Birmingham-area Jews and their families.
Rabbi Boruch and Ita Leah Cohen are the spiritual leaders of the center.
The Name, Explained
According to Jewish spiritual tradition, every generation has thirty-six hidden 'mystics' - special selfless souls generating healing spiritual energy for the good of humanity.
The beauty of these mystics is their purity of intent - a humility so deep that their deepest fear is the mere thought of recognition.
Beyond that, the true beauty of a hidden mystic is that he or she is hidden. Possibly a next-door neighbor, the workmate sitting two cubicles away, or the Barista currently blending your Vanilla Bean Creme Frappuccino!
The message is clear - we shouldn't judge another person's worth by physical appearance, but by quality of character and simplicity of soul. The biggest schlimazel in the room might just be a secret mystic in impenetrable disguise.
